| Name: | Maximilian Pegasus |
|---|
Character: Maximilian J. Pegasus (changed from "Maximillion", as the misspelling drives me nuts)
Series: Yu-Gi-Oh! the anime and manga, plus a slew of video games, the card game, and other merchandise.
Version: From the Duelist Kingdom arc, right after episode 27.
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Bisexual; the fact that he likes women can't be disputed, considering his utter devotion to his wife. This long after her death, though, while the grief is still painful, it has abated enough to let his natural interest in both sexes peek out. He's still at the point where he considers it being unfaithful to her memory if he actually acts on said interest, though—it would likely require a fair bit of work to shake that view before he allows himself into ANY other relationship.

Appearance: Pegasus is a large man, 6'2" and 143 lbs., with broad shoulders and chest, long limbs, and the hands of an artist. His size is incongruent with his levity and cheer; he almost always wears a smile, and his eye—the one that's still his, anyway—is a rich golden brown that typically conveys warmth and humor. The other, his left one, is a gleaming gold artifact, fashioned after the design of the eye of Horus; his left eye was essentially gouged out so it could fit. Contrasting with it is a lightly tanned complexion, and a long mane of silver hair that falls a few inches past his shoulders, styled so that a curtain of hair always falls over his false eye while the other side remains clear. His typical outfit is a red, tailored double-breasted suit with white piping and gold buttons, over a white poet's shirt with ruffled collar, front, and cuffs that peep out from his sleeves. Rather than a traditional tie, he wears a black cravat ribbon tied in a showy bow, finishing the outfit off with polished white leather wingtips. The overall look he presents, to most people, seems to come off as at once serious and business-like, but extravagantly theatric.
Personality: Pegasus, essentially, is a gentleman dreamer. Born and bred to be the epitome of a class act, he seems to see it as simple noblesse oblige to play his part as a wealthy leader of business and recreation. Indeed, the sheer magnitude of his faults seems to simply use up all the disagreeableness that most people use in things like petty squabbling and impoliteness. The man is debonair and gracious in all senses of the words, and seems to genuinely enjoy most of the civil company he has, perhaps because of how few people he gets to associate with on an honestly personal level. He has a wry, quirky sense of humor, and harbors a childlike sense of wonder, allowing him to enjoy both simple pastimes like comics and cartoons, and sensual, even spiritual ones like fine wine and painting. Deep down, he's a compassionate soul, eager to create and share things, his life included, with people he can love and devote himself to utterly; when he truly cherishes something, it consumes him to the point of obsession.
Even so, despite all his charm and agreeable qualities, he seems driven to have a completely uncharacteristic, almost sociopathic disregard towards others and their emotions when they stand in the way of his goals. His inability to cope with the magnitude of his grief and the finality of his loss left him shattered in his solitude, temporarily reducing him to a withered hull of who he once was. The dark magic bestowed upon him by the Eye, however, not only gave him hope and renewed vitality, but twisted it and his personality into something unrecognizable. The changes may not show all the time, but every so often, his distorted psyche can be seen, turning him into a callous madman driven to forsake and betray all values to obtain his heart's desire. He even seems to enjoy turning away from his morals at points—whether this is simply the result of his insanity, or possibly a darker presence in his Eye is uncertain. So far, he seems blind to the possibility that his wife may not want or even accept such monstrous actions taken for her sake—perhaps, subconsciously, his idealism believes that the purity of his love and motives will cleanse him of his sins.
Abilities/Weaponry: Pegasus is a reasonably strong, untrained man for his age and size, which, compared to most non-natives at Paixao, doesn't say much. He typically carries a loaded revolver with a bit of extra ammunition, and his dueling deck--though the latter is only a weapon in conjunction with his Millennium Eye. The Eye gives him some limited control over the Shadow Realm, a pocket dimension of continual darkness and infested with monsters—specifically, it allows him to pull part of that dimension into the real world, and exercise some control over the monsters and magic within, including pulling them out to the real world to do his bidding. It also allows him to pull out people's souls to seal into another object, and see what normal sight cannot, particularly the contents of people's minds. Since the soul isn't destroyed, the body remains alive, but in a mindless, almost comatose state. Of course, being in Paixao, his powers are all weakened a fair bit; they all take their toll on him now, and he can only do so much before the strain forces him to rest before he can try anything more, much like most people exhaust themselves with hard physical labor.
Weaknesses: Despite what Pegasus may want you to believe, he is only a mere mortal, an ordinary man with no special powers of his own. He may be physically strong, but he isn't a trained fighter, nor is he a born genius or nobility. His money (and other resources, like his own private island), fame, and charm are essentially the only things he has to fall back on as a person, none but the latter of which he can fall back on in Paixao, with the Millennium Eye being of limited functionality there. Beyond that, he’s rather arrogant, and overly used to getting his way and being able to manipulate and read others, through his wealth, influence, and Millennium Eye. His wife is also a major, major weak point for him; he hasn’t been truly happy since she died, and he would do anything within his power to get her back. Yes, absolutely anything.
History: Pegasus was born the son of a highly influential, wealthy businessman in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the United States of America. He was raised with all the care and training money and loving parents could provide, to be turned into a wholesome and high-class young man, even aristocratic to some degree, thanks to his father's status. When he was only eight years old, he met Cecilia via their parents, business partners, at a high profile dinner party at his father's country estate. Despite their young age, he was lovestruck at first sight, and the two quickly grew inseparable, to grow up the best of friends. It was never a whirlwind courtship; the two of them swept each other off their feet straight from the start, and the idyllic years seemed to fly by, as Cecilia brought out the very best in Pegasus, becoming his best friend and only love, not to mention his muse and favorite subject to inspire his painting career. Nine perfect years passed that way, until he proposed to her at the age of seventeen. She agreed without reservation, and with the full blessing of their families, they were wed.
Fate allowed Pegasus not even a year of marital bliss before his life was blasted into ruin. A sudden, severe illness overtook Cecilia. Pegasus was at her side almost every waking instant after she had to be brought to the hospital, sparing no expense in the eventually futile battle to save her; she died on their anniversary, in his arms. Cecilia was buried in state, and after, Pegasus simply fell apart. The grief shattered him; he simply could not remain whole and accept that the one he'd devoted his life to had been torn away. His inspiration and will to live withered; the inconsolable artist spent months as a near hermit in a mournful daze, devoting his time to thinking of her and reading piles of literature about the afterlife in different belief systems. Eventually, his reading motivated him to travel to Egypt's great pyramids, in the hopes that his artistic inspiration could be resurrected, and perhaps that he could find spiritual succor in its ancient belief of the afterlife, or even find some way to make it a reality, and bring back his Cecilia in the flesh.
At fate would have it, a stray wind forced him to chase his hat down and meet Shaadi, a mysterious priest who somehow knew of his grief; Pegasus followed him down to a crypt where the Millennium Items lay, and Shaadi told him of their history, before choosing the Millennium Eye to test his worth—by jamming it into his socket and obliterating his natural eye in the process. The Eye found him to be its worthy and destined owner, and because of it, bestowed its dark powers on him rather than destroy his mind and soul. The magic he was subjected to was beyond his comprehension; it excruciatingly twisted his mind and fractured his sanity, but with its powers, offered him new hope and insight on his problems. He lingered in Egypt for some time, studying the stone tablets and related writings that ancient Egyptians were reputed to use in magical duels in another dimension. Whether some kind of dormant spirit inside the Eye manipulated him to do so, the dark energies of the artifact itself, or some sort of mad revelation from the experience inspired him, the results were the same: he created Industrial Illusions Incorporated and moved to Japan to model a Duel Monsters card game off of the ancient rites, partnering with Kaiba Corporation to increase their sway and becoming friends with Seto in the process.
All this time, he was working to perfect his mastery of the Eye, and at some point, discovered a way to synthesize Kaiba Co.'s illusion technology with the combined Millennium Items' magic to resurrect Cecilia. He would stop at nothing once that idea was born, and quickly schemed up the Duelist Kingdom Tournament as bait to draw Seto and Yugi in. Yugi's grandfather's soul was taken as further motivation for him, whereas Pegasus betrayed and snared Seto by initiating a coup de e'tat in Kaiba Co. and stealing his little brother's body and soul. At present, he had just dueled Seto for the young man’s soul, and his plans were rolling along nicely—or they would have been, if Paixao hadn't interrupted.
